Words you may encounter
Both languages appear together so you can recognize terms even when a label or bill is in English. These explanations are a communication aid, not medication-use instructions.

| Active ingredient | Principio activo | The substance responsible for the medicine’s action. |
| Brand name | Nombre comercial | The product name; it does not identify every formulation containing an ingredient. |
| Compounded medication | Medicamento de preparación magistral | A medicine prepared for a patient’s needs. Compounded drugs are not FDA approved. |
| Prescription | Receta médica | The clinician’s medication order, including how it should be used. |
| Dose | Dosis | The amount prescribed for one administration. Ask which unit the instructions use. |
| Concentration | Concentración | How much ingredient is in a given volume. It can differ between products and refills. |
| Milligram (mg) | Miligramo (mg) | A unit of mass. It is different from the volume measured in milliliters. |
| Milliliter (mL) | Mililitro (mL) | A unit of liquid volume. It does not by itself tell you the medication dose. |
| Syringe units | Unidades de la jeringa | Markings on a specific syringe. Ask the dispensing pharmacist to show the exact mark for your prescription. |
| Dose escalation | Aumento gradual de la dosis | A clinician-directed increase in dose over time; it is not an instruction to increase it yourself. |
| Refill | Reposición del medicamento | The next supply. Check the label and instructions each time it arrives. |
| Missed dose | Dosis olvidada | A scheduled dose that was not taken. The instructions depend on the exact product. |
| Side effect | Efecto secundario | An unwanted effect that may occur with a medicine. Ask what needs a routine call or urgent attention. |
| Contraindication | Contraindicación | A condition or circumstance in which a treatment should not be used. |
| Medication interaction | Interacción entre medicamentos | When another medicine or substance affects how a medicine works or its risks. |
| Beyond-use date | Fecha límite de uso | The date on the compounded product’s label after which it should not be used. Ask about storage and any earlier limit after opening. |
| Lab tests | Análisis de laboratorio | Tests a clinician may request based on your history and care needs. |
| Prior authorization | Autorización previa del seguro | A coverage approval process that some insurers require; approval is not guaranteed. |
| Copay | Copago | The fixed amount your insurance plan requires you to pay for a covered service or prescription. |
| Membership fee | Cuota de membresía | A program charge that may be separate from medication. Ask what it includes. |
| Prepayment | Pago por adelantado | Money charged now for a longer term. An advertised monthly equivalent may not be the amount due today. |
| Renewal | Renovación | The next subscription charge. Confirm the date, amount and cancellation deadline. |
Your visit checklist
Bring these questions to your visit. You can take notes on your printed copy.
- Bring your medication list, supplements, allergies, relevant history and recent test results.
- If changing providers, bring the exact product label, current prescription, last dose amount and date, and previous side effects.
- Ask: What exact product and formulation are you prescribing, and why does it fit my situation?
- Ask the pharmacist to demonstrate the prescribed amount using the exact device you will receive. Explain it back before leaving the conversation.
- Ask: What should I do if I miss a dose, have side effects, or cannot eat or drink normally?
- Ask how to store your exact product, what changes after opening, and whom to call after a temperature problem.
- Confirm which tests you need, where to get them, who receives the results and what is included in your plan.
- Get the full amount due now, renewal price, billing interval, minimum commitment and cancellation terms in writing.
- Confirm how to reach your clinician, pharmacist and support team, and whether those conversations can take place in Spanish.

Can I convert milligrams to syringe units with this glossary?
No. Concentrations and devices can vary. Ask your pharmacist for instructions for your exact prescription and syringe; do not copy another patient’s amount or an earlier prescription.
Does this resource replace a consultation?
No. It helps you prepare questions and understand terms. It does not determine your medication, dose, eligibility or need for testing.
